Principal's Message

This week was a reminder of the incredible community that is Douglas. Wednesday's 29th Annual Veterans Day Assembly was engaging and informative for all. It was great to see so many members of our community come together to remember and honor veterans who served our country during several eras, and for students to meet men and women who still serve. Among our guests in the audience-Superintendent Peter Light and Deputy Superintendent Andrew Shen. Thank you, PTO, Melissa Callaghan, who spearheaded this effort for years, Peter Broggi, music teacher extraordinaire, our 5th-grade teachers, and of course, our 5th-graders. It was a very special day!

Wednesday night featured an informative discussion with Superintendent Light at our PTO meeting. He talked about AB Forward and the district's reorganization effort, how to give input into the process, and the next steps. Thank you, PTO co-President Jill O'Neill, for moderating the discussion. We appreciate so many members of our community joining us for the meeting.

On the instructional side of things, our staff took a look at schoolwide data this week to determine how to best meet the needs of our students. This was a step in our commitment and consistent effort to improve our Tier 1 instruction for our students. We will continue this work on Monday, November 10th, during our professional learning day.

As a reminder, there is no school for students, Monday, November 10th, for professional learning and Tuesday, November 11th, as we commemorate Veterans Day.

Enjoy the time with friends and family.

Gift Policy

It's National Kindness Month and the holidays are quickly approaching. With that, I want to remind you of the school committee's gift policy and laws around gift giving. An individual family may not give a teacher a gift that exceeds $50 in value during the school year (August-June) A group may not give gifts exceeding $150 for the school year. A group giving a gift cannot in the group members' names. (For example, "Mr. Mullen's Class") should sign the card. Parents/caregivers may give gifts to the classroom. The school committee must accept any contribution over $1,000.

Spotlight On

Second Grade

In Math, we are working with tape diagrams to help show our thinking. Students are using fact families to understand how numbers are related. We have also been comparing information on bar graphs and using tape diagrams to find the difference between two numbers. Students have been seeing the connection between part-part-whole! In Reading We are continuing to read Off to Class. Students are learning about disabilities and impairments that can make going to school challenging through the article “A Sense of Independence.” We are exploring how schools around the world make accommodations for students and think outside the box to solve problems. In Science, we’ve been diving into geography! Students have been wrapping up their "Me On The Map" projects. In Fundations, we are working in Unit 3! Students are working closely with closed syllable exceptions and new trick words. In SEL (Social Emotional Learning), we learned about positive self talk! We talked about helpful and unhelpful thoughts and what to say to ourselves when we are struggling or not confident.

6th Grade

As part of the 6th grade ELA curriculum, students have been exploring ancient myths and heroic adventures through the mentor text Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. To extend their learning beyond the classroom, the 6th grade team hosted the Greek Olympics. A hands-on celebration of literature, history, and teamwork.

In true Camp Half-Blood fashion, students were sorted into “cabins” that spanned across classes, encouraging collaboration. Throughout the day, cabins competed in a variety of Olympic-style challenges that tested their physical skills, problem-solving abilities, and team spirit. From relay races and tug-a-war to physical challenges, every event was filled with energy, laughter, and learning.

The Greek Olympics not only helped students connect more deeply with the themes and characters from their reading, but also gave them the chance to build community and celebrate their hard work.
