Principal's Message

As we head toward the Thanksgiving recess, I want to take a few minutes to express my gratitude for all that you do to support your children every day at C.T. Douglas Elementary School. From chaperoning field trips, attending community meetings to coming into our building for events such as our second grade's fall festival you consistently make a concerted effort to support all things Douglas. I am honored to serve as the principal of Douglas and truly appreciate all of you.

AB Forward
The process of the reorganization of our AB community continues to take shape. In case you haven't heard, I included Superintendent Light's most recent update, written after Tuesday's Steering Committee meeting. The note from the Superintendent is below. You'll see that a handful of the options outlined by our consultants were eliminated. The Committee meets again right after Thanksgiving-aiming to whittle the options down to 2 or 3, sending those to the School Committee. The Committee will decide in January which option will move forward.

Please enjoy some time next week with friends and family. Wishing you a very happy Thanksgiving! Thank you!

Update on AB Regional School District Reorganization

November 19, 2025 - The AB Forward Steering Committee met on 11/18/2025 and voted to eliminate 5 options from consideration. The options that are not moving forward are:

  1. Option 1: Maintain the status quo.
  2. Option 7, Version 1: Maintain all 4 elementary buildings and all 6 individual elementary schools, but organized as K-5, moving 6th grade to the Junior High.
  3. Option 7, Version 2: Maintain all 4 elementary buildings and all 6 individual elementary schools, but organized as K-5, moving 6th grade to the Junior High and moving 8th graders to the High School.
  4. Option 8, Version 1: Combine the K-5 grade-level shift (moving 6th graders to the Junior High) with any of the elementary consolidation options.
  5. Option 9: Expand the region (this option is a long-term solution and would require significant coordination and planning).
After two rounds of voting, this decision to eliminate the above options was made based on polling where committee members had expressed unanimous agreement. The other options had varied levels of support for either elimination or keeping, and will be discussed further at the December 2nd meeting.

This stage of the process involves incredibly difficult decision-making. A decision that may feel like relief to some may represent a significant loss for others. I would strongly encourage us all to act with both empathy and compassion for all of the members of our community as we move through the next month or so together. This is not easy and is deeply impacting many of us in different ways.

We will work to have all of the documents, information, and a detailed summary of the meeting posted to our website over the next few days.

Sincerely,

Peter Light

Gift Policy

It's National Kindness Month and the holidays are quickly approaching. With that, I want to remind you of the school committee's gift policy and laws around gift giving. An individual family may not give a teacher a gift that exceeds $50 in value during the school year (August-June) A group may not give gifts exceeding $150 for the school year. A group giving a gift cannot in the group members' names. (For example, "Mr. Mullen's Class") should sign the card. Parents/caregivers may give gifts to the classroom. The school committee must accept any contribution over $1,000.

Spotlight On

Physical Education with Mrs. Kathleen Ammendolia, Grades K - 6

In grades K -2 we have been exploring all sorts of manipulatives like Hula Hoops of all sizes, Jump Ropes, using Gym Scooters, and various tag games.   We worked on balance skills using balance boards, small stilts, and also used the traverse climbing wall. We have played all sorts of cooperative games including throwing and striking skills.  You may have heard about some of our silly and fun tag games like Skunk Tag and Knee Tag.  Locomotor Movements like running, skipping, and jumping are always a part of our PE classes and we move and groove to music all the time.  We are going to soon move to dribbling with our hands using playground balls, and striking skills as the winter approaches.   Lots of fun and skill building in both our Little and Big Gymnasiums  at the Boardwalk Campus.

Grades 3 - 6 Physical Education classes have been playing cooperative games, using our striking skills, and our team building skills.  We have played Scooter Hockey, and worked on our balance skills and used the traverse climbing wall.  Grade 4  is doing a deep dive on Jump Roping this year.  We are going to work to improve our jump rope skills all year long!  Grade 6 completed their Greek Olympics Ceremonies a few weeks ago, and these Track and Field type events were full of fun and excitement between the cabins.
Grades 4, 5, and 6 look forward to using some of the high climbing elements in the Little Gym this winter.  We will learn and practice how to put a climbing harness on and off on our own, clip into a belay system, and finally climb our vertical climbing wall and some grades will get to try the “Flying Squirrel.”  All of these high elements are “Challenge by Choice,” so if a student is not comfortable trying one or both of these elements they do not have to.

Grades K through 6 will look forward to a visit to the “Douglas Bowladrome.”   Grade K will complete some Caterpillar Bowling activities and grades 1-6 will play some Bowling Bingo.

Special Education-Kristen Fearon, Special Education Coordinator

The Douglas Special Education Department provides a continuum of specialized services for students K-6 to meet the needs of individual learners identified with a variety of different disabilities. All programs promote inclusion and emphasize skill development and skill remediation, along with the development of self-advocacy skills for greater independence and responsibility for learning.
We provide:

  • Academic instruction and support through the Learning Center
  • Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy
  • Psychological and Counselling Services
  • Educational Evaluations

Douglas is also home to one of Acton-Boxborough’s Specialized Special Education Programs; Language and Beyond (LAB). LAB services students in grades 3-6. Students receiving support are primarily identified with Specific Learning Disabilities and/or Communication disorders. This highly structured, language-based program provides intensive specially designed instruction that is individualized based on student needs during ELA and Math. At the same time, students access the general education grade level content through preview/review of concepts, modified curriculum materials and assessments and additional instructional support. Providing each child with many opportunities for success academically, socially and emotionally are essential components to this specialized program.

This school year, Douglas welcomed a new Special Education Coordinator, Ms. Kristen Fearon. Ms. Fearon supports Douglas staff, students, and families with all matters related to special education. She comes to us with 18 years of experience with a background as an elementary special education teacher, assistant principal, and special education coordinator. She is excited to be a part of the Acton-Boxborough community.
