About the Library

The Douglas library has over 11,000 books and periodicals available for students and staff. The catalog system is available online to help us access material. Other reference materials and student resources, as well as the Minuteman Library network, are also available online.

The library is open full time during regular school hours. Each class has 45 minutes per week of library class time. Between classes, our door is open to students and staff to come in, use the library resources, and receive help as needed.

In library classes, we read aloud to all children in Grades K through 6. We make a special effort to expose students at all grade levels to different genres of literature and to feature award-winning books.

Children in Grades 4 through 6 receive formal instruction in research and study skills. The Media Center curriculum includes topics such as library organization, efficient use of the computerized catalog, the parts of a book, and use of reference materials. We use short lectures, worksheets, student presentations, and fun activities to teach skills within a limited time.

During library classes, children select books to check out. Children check out books for one week at a time, and books may be renewed up to three times. Children do not need to bring books in to be renewed. We ask parents to help children remember to return their books on Library Day!

The library has a strong parent volunteer staff of who, during library classes, help children select, locate, and check out books. Volunteers also shelve and reorganize books, repair books, and participate in special projects. The library is great place to start volunteering - meet other parents, and work with children. Volunteers also have borrowing privileges in the library! We train volunteers as needed.

We invite you to visit the Media Center when you visit Douglas, and we welcome your suggestions and comments.
